Activity of antiretroviral drugs in human infections by opportunistic agents BJPS
Demarchi,Izabel Galhardo; Cardozo,Daniela Maira; Aristides,Sandra Mara Alessi; Moliterno,Ricardo Alberto; Silveira,Thaís Gomes Verzignassi; Cardoso,Rosilene Fressatti; Bertolini,Dennis Armando; Svidzinski,Terezinha Inez Estivalet; Teixeira,Jorge Juarez Vieira; Lonardoni,Maria Valdrinez Campana.
Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is used in patients infected with HIV. This treatment has been shown to significantly decrease opportunist infections such as those caused by viruses, fungi and particularly, protozoa. The use of HAART in HIV-positive persons is associated with immune reconstitution as well as decreased prevalence of oral candidiasis and candidal carriage. Antiretroviral therapy benefits patients who are co-infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis B virus (HBV), parvovirus B19 and cytomegalovirus (CMV). HAART has also led to a significant reduction in the incidence, and the modification of characteristics, of bacteremia by etiological agents such as...

Aflatoxin M1 in the urine of non-carriers and chronic carriers of hepatitis B virus in Maringa, Brazil BJPS
Giolo,Marcel Padovani; Oliveira,Christiane Minervino de; Bertolini,Dennis Armando; Lonardoni,Maria Valdrinez Campana; Gouveia,Matheus Sampaio; Netto,Daisy Pontes; Nixdorf,Suzana Lucy; Machinski Junior,Miguel.
Exposure to aflatoxins (AFs) in the diet may favour the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and the acute exacerbation of hepatitis in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers. Measurement of biomarkers such as aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), a metabolite of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), in urine allows for the assessment of populations exposed to aflatoxins. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin M1 in the urine of HBV carrier and non-carrier patients. One group included 43 randomly selected HBV carriers treated at two hospitals in the city of Maringa, Brazil, from March to June 2008. Control group consisted of 29 healthy adult volunteers with anti-HBs positive and HBsAg negative test results. Detection of AFM1 was performed by...

Comparison of different primes for PCR-based diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis BJID
Oliveira,Diego Molina de; Lonardoni,Maria Valdrinez Campana; Teodoro,Ueslei; Silveira,Thais Gomes Verzignassi.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze different primers that are commonly used in epidemiological studies for the detection of Leishmania DNA by PCR, and to compare them to the conventional direct parasite search for American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five pairs of primers, four of them derived from Leishmania kDNA sequences (MP3H-MP1L; B1-B2; LBF1-LBR1; 13A-13B), and one derived from the SL RNA (mini-exon) gene repeat (LU5A-LB3C), reported previously, were used. RESULTS: The MP3H-MP1L primers were the best at amplifying the DNA, detecting 2 fg of Leishmania spp. DNA. The 13A-13B primers presented the worst performance, detecting 512 x 10³ fg of DNA. CONCLUSION: The wide variation in the analytical...

Diagnosis of American cutaneous leishmaniasis by enzyme immunoassay in patients from Northern Paraná State, Brazil BJID
Yoneyama,Kelly Aparecida Geraldo; Peder,Leyde Daiane de; Lonardoni,Maria Valdrinez Campana; Silveira,Thaís Gomes Verzignassi.
American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is an endemic disease caused by Leishmania parasites. The ACL diagnosis is commonly accomplished by parasitological and immunological methods. The objective of this work was to evaluate the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for ACL laboratorial diagnosis. IgG antibodies against Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis promastigotes were researched. For the method standardization 240 sera were used: 72 from patients with positive parasitological diagnosis, 38 from normal individuals and 113 from individuals with other pathologies. The sensibility was 93% and the specificity was 70%. Regarding diagnosis, EIA showed 97% positivity in patients with ACL and 97% negativity in patients with other cutaneous lesions. The EIA presented a good...

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of cutaneous leishmaniasis and their relationship with the laboratory data, south of Brazil BJID
Curti,Maura Cristiani de Moura; Silveira,Thaís Gomes Verzignassi; Arraes,Sandra Mara Alessi Aristides; Bertolini,Dennis Armando; Zanzarini,Paulo Donizeti; Venazzi,Eneide Aparecida Sabaini; Fernandes,Andrea Cláudia Silva; Teixeira,Jorge Juarez Vieira; Lonardoni,Maria Valdrinez Campana.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical, epidemiological and laboratorial aspects for the understanding of the disease characteristics and its relationship with diagnostic tests. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive and analytical study involving 2,660 American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) suspected patients from southern Brazil was undertaken between April 1986 and December 2005. Data on population characteristics and laboratory tests were obtained. Diagnostic laboratory tests used were direct search for Leishmania spp. (DS), Montenegro skin test (MST) and indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA). RESULTS: 62.3% of patients were positive for at least one laboratory test. DS test was positive in 65.1%; MST in 92.3% and IFA in 70.0%. Although Cohen's Kappa test did...

This work reports the results of sandfly collections in several places, during 2001 and 2002, in Bom Sucesso, Jardim Alegre, Kaloré, Londrina and Sabáudia municipalities, North of the State. The sandflies catches were performed with Shannon and Falcão traps in domiciliary areas, domestic animal shelters, barns and in the forest. A total of 4,019 specimens of 8 species were captured. Nyssomyia whitmani predominates in all of the municipalities. The species Migonemyia migonei, Nyssomyia neivai and N. whitmani may be involved in the epidemiology of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis in this state.
